Learn Photoshop Elements : Free ECourse
Photoshop Elements is the software program I use to edit my photos before printing, organize my digital photos, and create digital scrapbooking layouts. Elements is a lot easier to use than the full Photoshop program (and much less expensive), but it can still take some time to learn how to get the most from it. For a few years, I’ve been taking classes at JessicaSprague.com and ReneePearson.com to learn photo editing and digital scrapbooking. I highly recommend both sites. I only recently learned about Kim Klassen’s online classes.
Kim Klassen teaches a free Photoshop Elements course called, the Photoshop Skinny-Mini ECourse. This online class begins on January 9th, so if you’re interested, sign up today. It’s a 10-part, self-paced mini course that will teach you some of the basics of Photoshop Elements. Remember, if you don’t have PSE yet, you can download a 30-day trial from the Adobe site (Kim provides the link.)
Even if you aren’t interested in this ecourse, please do take a few minutes to visit Kim’s blog. You won’t want to miss her photography. Her photos are amazing and so inspiring! I signed up for her Beyond Layers class just because I fell in love with her blog and think reading inspiring emails from her will be a wonderful way to start my mornings in 2012.
Christmas Scrapbooking Gifts – Recipe Books
I’m planning to highlight a few Christmas gift ideas that you can make using your scrapbooking skills. The internet is full of fantastic ideas to make handmade holiday gifts with supplies you already have. Most of them can be made either using traditional, digital or hybrid scrapbooking methods. Today’s idea is a simple recipe book you can give either filled with your favorite recipes or blank for some who loves to cook.
Molly at Biograffiti posted this simple DIY recipe book using some digital templates and an album she found at Target. It turned out beautifully. She used a digital scrapbooking kit called “At Home” designed by Paislee Press. As for the album, I’ve spotted them at the Target in my area in the photo album section.

To make this as simple as possible, you can use digital templates found at Oscraps or purchase the entire digital kit which includes the recipe card templates in JPG and PSD files complete with paper layers from the Paislee Press kit. It also includes complete instructions. Of course, the album is not included. It’s a digital download product.
I love how easy this looks and how the Paislee Press papers coordinate with the color of the album. This is a perfect idea for a digital scrapbooker, but even a traditional scrapbooker can take this idea and use supplies they have on hand to create their own version of this recipe holder.
Watch for more quick and easy scrapbooking Christmas gift ideas over the next week.
Learn Hybrid Scrapbooking from Cathy Zielske

- Image by nicolernorman via Flickr
Cathy Zielske recently posted a hybrid scrapbooking tuturial on her blog. What is hybrid scrapbooking? Basically, it’s using both digital and traditional elements on a scrapbooking page. Some people start with a traditional layout and add digital elements. Others begin with a digital page layout and after printing they add traditional elements to it.
Cathy’s approach to hybrid scrapbooking begins with her computer. In the video she uses Photoshop Elements to show you how she approaches a hybrid scrapbooking layout. She uses a digital layout as the base for her page. She adds in traditional patterned paper to her layout, but one of the great tips in the video is using the digital layout to create a template to cut the paper to size.

Learn Digital Scrapbooking Online
I did sign up for Jessica Sprague’s 2 new online digital scrapbooking classes, Beautiful Evidence and BrushAbilities. I’ve already learned a lot in BrushAbilities, and it’s only Day 3! Beautiful Evidence starts later this month. I’m getting so addicted to these classes, I don’t know what I’m going to do when I run out of classes to take. If anyone knows of some other good digital scrapbooking classes online, please leave me a comment and let me know. I love the ones that teach you as you actual create pages with your own photos. I have a bunch of layouts I made in Jessica’s classes already.
I wrote a couple of reviews of the classes I’ve taken so far from JessicaSprague.com. I just completed another and will be posting a review of that class soon. You can check out my reviews here:

New Digital Scrapbooking Classes from Jessica Sprague
Jessica Sprague has just announced 2 new classes over at jessicasprague.com. The classes are:
- Brush Abilities
- Beautiful Evidence : 20 pages in 20 days
I’m seriously considering both of these classes. As I said in a previous post, I’ve been so impressed by Jessica’s teaching style and I’ve learned so much from the classes I’ve taken so far. Jessica’s online classes are by far the best way to learn digital scrapbooking. I learned more from a single class from her than I have by reading several books on digital scrapbooking. There’s something about not only following along with her on video as she completes a page layout that let’s you really absorb the techniques rather than just reading instructions.
Brush Abilities
is an instructor-led, 2-week class in video form. It includes teaching on both Photoshop Elements and Photoshop. Like the title says, the class focuses on photoshop brush techniques. She even includes ideas for organizing your brush collections.
Beautiful Evidence
If you’re interested in either of these classes, visit JessicaSprague.com and click on “Online Classes” to sign up. Registration starts today, so don’t delay. Her classes fill up very quickly.
Digital Scrapbooking: Me??
I never thought I would say this, but I’ve started digital scrapbooking. I’ve always wondered why people would choose digital scrapbooking over traditional scrapbooking. I mean really? Give up those gorgeous embellishments, trendy papers, and all that shopping for the latest goodies in scrapbooking? Well, now I know.
First of all, you don’t have to choose between digital scrapbooking and traditional scrapbooking. You can do both on separate layouts, or you can even do both on the same page layout! Combining both digital and traditional scrapbooking on a page is now known as hybrid scrapbooking (it sounds so green doesn’t?) Basically, the idea is to use your computer to create digital elements to put on your traditional layouts. Some of you may already use your computer to type up your journaling. That is a basic form of hybrid scrapbooking.
So how did I get started digital scrapbooking? I was looking for a tutorial on photoshop elements to learn to edit my photos before printing them. What I found was Jessica Sprague. You might know Jessica from Creating Keepsakes or its sister magazines. She is an expert in digital scrapbooking, but she also teaches photo editing from her website. Her photo editing class is amazing! I also can’t say enough about how professionally produced her classes are. The classes are made up of online videos that you can follow along with your own software program. Miss something as she’s talking? Just pause or rewind and catch up with her. It’s a fantastic way to learn how to edit your photos. If you’re interested in trying one of her classes, the one I took is called Photo Editing: Good-to-Great Workflow.
It was the forums that got me hooked on digital scrapbooking. It’s hard not to get caught up in the excitement of digital scrapbookers. Since I enjoyed Jessica’s photo class so much, I decided to try a digital scrapbooking class just to see what it’s all about. I’ve always known scrapbooking is addictive, and now I know digital scrapbooking is the same way! I’m almost embarrassed to say that I was having so much fun with the self-paced digital scrapbooking class that I spent nearly an entire weekend obsessed with finishing it. (I think it’s supposed to be a 4-week class, but it’s also self paced so you can do it as you have time.)
I’m planning to blog more about my digital scrapbooking experience, but for now, if you’d like to check out Jessica Sprague’s beginning digital scrapbooking class, it’s called Up & Running WIth Photoshop (it covers both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements).
