Making Unique Scrapbook Spaces in Your Own Home
Do you love to scrapbook? Do you wish you had more room in your home to indulge in this hobby? Unfortunately most don't have a spare room they can set aside just for scrapping, but chances are you can find unique scrapbook spaces in your home if you take a fresh look at the space you do have.
Remember that scrapbooking does involve a lot of accessories when it comes to pages, embellishments, scissors, stamps, and so on, but finding unique scrapbook spaces might mean just getting better organized with these things rather than thinking you need a large space to spread everything out. Really, as long as your space is large enough to accommodate a desk and a few shelves you can have just about anything and everything you need for your hobby. So when looking for unique scrapbook spaces in your home you can start looking at corner, closets, and other small spaces that might just need some work to make them appropriate. Usually the family may not appreciate the scrapbooking desk right in the living room or dining room so just keeping an eye on these large areas not only might not work, it might not be necessary either. So what are some unique scrapbook spaces that you can find in your home?
First look at unused closets in spare rooms. No one wants to sit in a closet but most can be redone so that a desk can slide right into them; this way you're not in the closet but just have the desk in it. These make for unique scrapbook spaces because you can then add shelving over the desk for storage. And if you don't have a desk or can't afford one, you can add a long shelf at desk level that your chair can slide under to function as your desk. Another great reason that unused closets work as unique scrapbook spaces is that you can close the door to the mess when you're not working there or can easily add a curtain in front of it to do the same.
Along with closets, an unused area of the wall between two bookshelves might also function as unique scrapbook spaces for you. You can adhere a shelf or piece of wood that you've painted or stained to the wall at desk height and line the shelves up next to it. This makes it look as if the shelf is part of a built-in system or unit. If you don't have bookshelves already then just keep your eyes open for an open and unused wall that you can add such a large shelf to so that you are making your own unique scrapbook spaces with just a bit of carpentry needed.
If you're really experienced with home renovation then you can make unique scrapbook spaces right in the walls you already have. Behind your drywall are boards that hold up the walls; it's not unheard of for a professional decorator or renovator to remove some drywall and expose those boards to be used as shelves. For example, many put unique scrapbook spaces under stairways as this angled area can often be hollowed out and offers just enough space for work and storage. You might be able to knock out a wall between two rooms or push a closet back for this type of arrangement; of course it's always recommended that you consult with a professional renovator if you're going to be making your own unique scrapbook spaces this way as you don't want to cut through electrical wires, tear out plumbing, or remove a load bearing beam!
You may also need to get creative with storage when making or renovating for unique scrapbook spaces. One mistake that many people make is thinking that everything they use for scrapbooking needs to be on the desk in front of them. Remember that for storage you can add some shelves or cubbyholes to the wall going up. Some even have fun decorating tin cans or cups that they then nail or glue to the wall itself; try anything along these lines to give added storage to your unique scrapbook spaces. Shoeboxes, hatboxes, small bags you get from your favorite store, or anything else that will stay upright and provide storage can be decorated and attached to the wall for storage. This means that your unique scrapbook spaces won't need to be so big so as to accommodate a huge desk that will hold everything.
You might also need to get creative when it comes to your workspace when looking for unique scrapbook spaces in the home. Obviously whatever you use should be at desk height and you need to slide your chair under it so don't think an old dresser or TV cabinet will do. However sometimes it's possible to put a large piece of decorated wood on top of something else that works well as a base; some decorators and designers have used small end tables at either end of a large piece of plywood, or an old door that you cut to size and adhere to anything from an actual table base to workhorses you might see in a garage. To make your unique scrapbook spaces look appealing you of course want to paint or stain these or at the very least cover them with a large cloth. You can even use a cheap card table or folding table if you can cover it with something that makes it look more presentable.
The real key to discovering unique scrapbook spaces in your own home and making them work is to think outside the box, as they say. When you look at a closet don't just imagine hanging your clothes in it - imagine how it would work as a scrapbook area. Do the same for unused walls or corners of the house, garage or basement. It might take a bit of work but it's worth it once you have a nice place to work.
