Working With Suede Scrapbooking Paper
The great thing about scrapbooking as a hobby is that there is no end to the creativity you can express with your projects. If you want to use bottle caps or washers as an accent, or have a piece of cloth from your prom dress or grandma's tablecloth that you want to keep, then there's nothing stopping you. And to that end, many companies now are offering what closely resembled suede scrapbooking paper. While these types of textures for papers are beautiful to look at and give your page a unique 3D effect, there are some important tips you should remember when working with suede scrapbooking paper.
For one thing, since the paper itself will give your page that 3D effect, you might want to consider using fewer embellishments or ones that are made only of paper and other flat surfaces. Adding physical embellishments such as those bottle caps may make your page seem as if the embellishments are competing with the suede scrapbooking paper. Instead opt for things such as flat ribbon, doilies, other paper cutouts, or just stamps and stickers as embellishments.
Because of the texture of the suede scrapbooking paper many scrappers prefer to use it for accents itself rather than the page or the background. Suede scrapbooking paper usually has a "fuzzy" feeling and raised texture which makes it perfect for framing a photo or to use as a fun border. Also, it makes a perfect embellishment for any page that has to do with clothes or other materials. Use a cutout of a dress or jacket and you have a perfect set of items for a faux clothesline, to show off a page of someone at a sewing machine, or anyplace else where clothes come into play. You can also use suede scrapbooking paper to mimic an animal - find a dog or cat shape and trim the paper in that shape and you have a perfect accent for a page of your beloved pet.
Keep in mind that the colors of suede scrapbooking papers are usually much deeper than the colors on other papers, so you may want to use them sparingly. If you choose them as the main page, be sure you have many elements on the page or the paper itself might be overwhelming. If you use them as accents, be sure everything else on the page is neutral and lighter so it doesn't look as if everything is competing with one another.
