Card Making the Easy Way – A Review of 50 Card Making Sketches

“Card making sketches are the secret to card making success.” – Jen Gormly

Scrapbooking and card making are two hobbies that naturally go together.  Not only do they use many of the same supplies and tools, but the design concepts are very similar.  However, you also end up having the same obstacles to getting started and finishing a project.  Just like with scrapbooking templates, card making sketches can make all the difference in completing your greeting card projects.

I was given a copy of 50 Card Making Sketches along with three bonus ebooks to review.  Jen Gormly is the author of all four of these books.  She has a very easy –to-follow style of teaching, and I really like how concise and to the point all of the ebooks are.  She lays out the basics first, and then gives you ways to expand your skills as well.  That makes these ebooks great for crafters of all levels, beginner through advanced.

The first thing I noticed when I started reading is that 50 Card Making Sketches isn’t just a collection of sketches.  Jen first outlines how to use a sketch, how to personalize a sketch and how to vary a sketch.  Just like with scrapbooking templates, you can vary a card making sketch to create many different sketches from a single card template.   In fact, Jen will show you how to make 8 different sketches from just one sketch.  You can even use these same tips with your scrapbooking page layouts.

Before you even get started reading, I’d first suggest that you go to the very last pages of the book and print out the card summaries.  Have these beside you as you read through the book, and when you are done they will make a great reference to have as you are making cards.

Once you get into the actual card making sketches, you will see that 50 Card Making Sketches includes:

  • 15 square card sketches
  • 15 horizontal rectangular sketches
  • 20 vertical rectangular sketches

The sketches are grouped in these categories, square, horizontal rectangle and vertical rectangle.  You’ll see each sketch with a beautiful picture of an example using that sketch (along with the actual supplies used to create that card).  Jen gives you step-by-step instructions for using each card sketch.  It’s important to note that the instructions state the exact product she used for that card example, but you can use any coordinating products for your card.

Your Card Making Toolbox is provided as a bonus to 50 Card Making Sketches.  Jen does a great job of getting right to the basic tools that you need to make cards.  She tells you three essentials you must have and then gives suggestions for recommended extras.  She tells you what brands she uses to help make your shopping easier.  You will find that you will already have many of these things in your scrapbooking tools.

Stick It Together is a guide for choosing the right adhesive for card making.  Jen narrows it down to her two favorite adhesive products.  She considers these the essential glues for cards.  One of them is my all time favorite adhesive for scrapbooking, too.  I like that she gives you advice and product recommendations for specific types of objects, like ribbon, vellum and three dimensional embellishments.  She tells you the brand names she uses for her adhesives which will eliminate trial and error with different manufacturers.

81 Birthday Quotes is an additional bonus.  I would use these quotes on the cards as part of the embellishment, but I would still recommend a book that contains card greetings for the inside of your cards.  The quotes vary from serious to funny, and there is a nice selection.  These also would be great on scrapbooking pages.

50 Card Making Sketches is an excellent resource for crafters who want to easily and quickly make their own greeting cards.  These sketches can be used for any holiday, occasion or event.  Making cards is another economical way to use your scrapbooking scraps as well.  Don’t forget how much money you will save on buying greeting cards.

Jen is offering 50 Card Making Sketches at a reduced price for a limited time only.  She hasn’t given a specific date for when the pricing will increase.  This is a perfect time to purchase these card sketches and get started on your holiday cards.

Thank you to Jen for the opportunity to review 50 Card Making Sketches.

Learn Digital Scrapbooking with Jessica Sprague

A Review of Up and Running with Photoshop with Jessica Sprague

Yes this really is a beginners digital scrapbooking class, and no you don't need to have the expensive full version of Photoshop.  This class has separate videos for both Photoshop Elements and Photoshop.  I went through the Photoshop Elements videos even though I do have Photoshop.  I find Photoshop Elements to be a much easier and faster to learn program when you want to learn digital scrapbooking.  The best part is that you may even have Photoshop Elements already installed on your computer.  It comes pre-installed on many computers, as it did on my Dell laptop.

I've previously reviewed Jessica Sprague's online classes.  Jessica Sprague is a contributing editor for Creating Keepsakes, as well as the author of 3 publications on digital scrapbooking, Computer Tricks for Scrapbooking 1-3. I love the format of her online digital scrapbooking classes, that includes very professionally done instructional videos and printable notes as well.  As you follow the videos, you can even open up your digital scrapbooking software program (Elements or Photoshop) and pause the videos as you follow along with her step-by-step instructions.

One fantastic feature of this course, Up and Running with Photoshop, is that you will be digital scrapbooking within minutes.  Not only that, but by the time you finish the course, you will have digital scrapbooking layouts ready to be printed and placed in your scrapbook albums.  This is a self-paced, online class that includes 4 lessons, but there are also many bonus lessons.  In addition, each lesson is full of a variety of digital scrapbooking techniques that you can start using on your own pages right away.  You also receive a downloadable digital kit that you will use for your lessons, but that can also be used again and again in your own digital scrapbook layouts.

Some of the digital scrapbooking techniques covered in this lesson are:

  • Cropping and using photos on your layouts
  • Creating journaling in text boxes using multiple fonts
  • Using templates, frames and embellishments on your pages
  • How to install and use a digital brush
  • How to convert a photo to black and white and sepia tone

Don't worry that you have to learn and memorize everything in the lessons the first time you watch them either.  Not only can you go back and watch the videos as many times as you like, the videos are available to you forever. When you go to the course page, there is a class trailer that you can watch to see if this class is right for you.

I loved this class so much I signed up for 2 more digital scrapbooking classes with Jessica Sprague, Now We're Rockin With Photoshop and Digi: In Deep, intermediate and advanced digital scrapbooking classes.  I'm so glad I found Jessica Sprague's digital scrapbooking classes online.  Go to Up and Running with Photoshop with Jessica Sprague to see the class video preview.

Learn Digital Photo Editing from Jessica Sprague : A Review

After taking the online digital photo editing class, Photo Editing: Good-to-Great Workflow, I may never print another photograph without first editing it in photoshop.  This class taught me how to take photos that I think turned out pretty good to editing them into great photos!

Jessica Sprague teaches this class at JessicaSprague.com .  Jessica is a known digital scrapbooking expert.  She has written for Simple Scrapbooks magazine (now out of print) and currently she is a contributing editor for Creating Keepsakes on digital scrapbooking subjects.  Jessica Sprague is the author of 3 volumes of Computer Tricks for Scrapbooking.  I have all 3 of these publications and keep them close to my computer for reference whenever I am digital scrapbooking.

Photo Editing: Good-to-Great Workflow is a self-paced online class taught by Jessica Sprague.  The class is offered primarily through online videos and provides instruction in both Photoshop Elements and Photoshop.  I personally use Photoshop Elements, though I own both programs. I find Photoshop Elements much more user friendly and faster for digital scrapbooking.  Photoshop seems to be the preferred program for those who are advance digital scrapbookers.

This course includes 5 lessons and bonus lessons.  Don't think you are only going to learn 5 photo editing techniques though.  In each lesson, you learn a number of techniques for improving your photos.  You watch Jessica Sprague as she shows you step-by-step how to transform a photo into a gorgeous photograph.  You can even pause and start the video as you follow along with in your photoshop program on a photograph of your own.

Jessica Sprague's teaching style is calm and confident. You really do feel like she is right there with you as you work through the videos.  She doesn't overwhelm you with too much information, but still she explains what you need to know to not only complete the technique but to remember how to do it on your own later.  The course also comes with printable pdf notes that you can keep by your computer for reference.

In Photo Editing: Good-to-Great Workflow, Jessica Sprague teaches you how to edit exposure, brightness and contrast.  Her tips and techniques are sure to enhance your photos, especially your "not so great" ones.  She really does teach you how to transform a so-so photo to a terrific photo.  She also teaches you how to convert a photo to black and white or sepia tone.  You will also learn how to resize and sharpen your photos.  Finally, you'll learn how to save your photos either for print or for the web.

This class is for anyone who wants to learn how to improve their photos after they have been taken.  Even those who know the basics of photoshop editing will learn something from this course.  This my first class with Jessica Sprague and now I'm hooked on her online classes.  I've finished 3 courses offered on her site, and am registered for more.

Visit JessicaSprague.com for more information on her online photo editing class , and be sure to check out her freebies section as well.
