Some Simple Ideas for Scrapbooking Storage

Creating scrapbooks is a fun and interesting hobby for anyone and everyone, but if it has one drawback it's finding room for scrapbooking storage.  Because this hobby involves all sorts of small embellishments and papers that need to be sorted and kept safe, it can be difficult to arrange effective storage that allows you to easily access those items.  And of course you want to keep your scrapbooking storage in the same place you compose your actual scrapbooks, or want to organize it in a way that makes it easy to transport to the dining room table when necessary.  But unfortunately not everyone lives in a home with enough extra rooms so that you can devote one to scrapbooking, and not everyone can afford an entire modular unit just for scrapbooking storage.  In cases like these, you may need to get creative when it comes to storage ideas and concepts.  Let's take a look at some ideas you might want to consider.

For one thing, when it comes to scrapbooking storage for small embellishments, they're difficult to store because you have so many but want to see them even as they're stored.  Opening several different containers looking for the right set of embellishments, stickers, borders, stencils, and so on can be just irritating.  So when considering scrapbooking storage for small items, use see through containers or zipper sandwich bags.  Some have found that a corkboard in front of their workspace can help; if you use zipper sandwich bags you can then push a thumbtack or pushpin through the bag to hang it on the board, and everything is right in front of you as you work.  If you don't have clear containers, consider gluing one embellishment to the front of the container or just be sure to label those containers clearly so you know what's inside.  You might just write "fancy scroll borders" or "sewing scraps."  What you use to label your scrapbooking storage containers, just make sure it's something you understand and can quickly recognize.

Keeping papers safe is a difficult part of scrapbooking storage for serious scrappers.  You need to be able to flip through your papers easily without having them get bent or torn.  But they also need to be out of the way when you are working, which is also difficult when you consider their size.  When it comes to scrapbooking storage for papers, you may need to get creative.  If you're very serious about scrapbooking and have a lot of paper you may want to consider investing in an actual storage unit designed specifically for scrapbook paper.  Usually papers are then stored by color or theme.  For homemade scrapbooking storage for paper, clear zipper storage bags can help as well.  Make sure to purchase those that are larger than the typical 12x12 size of scrapbook paper.  Sort the paper by color or theme.  You can typically use just one shelf for paper and nothing else in order to keep it safe.  Some have even found that using a flat storage bin help when it comes to scrapbooking storage for paper; this keeps it flat and out of the way.

If you have a lot of stamps that you use for your pages, this too can create a problem when it comes to scrapbooking storage.  Stamps often come in different sizes and styles so they can get mixed up rather easily.  Office supply stores sell storage units for stamps specifically, or you can get a small shoebox for them.  A good idea is to cover the box with plain paper the way you would as if you were wrapping a gift and then putting a sample stamp on the paper so you know what's inside.  This way you don't need to fumble through every box looking for a particular stamp.  This makes scrapbooking storage for your stamps easier; using smaller boxes will also mean that they won't become a jumbled mess inside.  Try grouping your stamps as well - wording in one box, Christmas stamps in another, borders in another, and so on.  Keeping your items with like items is what helps with scrapbooking storage no matter what items you're trying to store.

If you need containers to help with your scrapbooking storage but are on a budget, you might be surprised at what you already have around the house if you start looking at things with a creative eye.  For example, keep those mayonnaise, pickle, and baby food jars rather than throwing them away; they can be cleaned out and the labels removed for see-through scrapbooking storage.  If you have unused furniture you're just storing in the basement or attic, think of how it too can be used for storage - old dressers can store containers, bookshelves can store papers, and so on.  You might need to make some basic repairs or repurpose some parts of that furniture, but it can mean very cheap scrapbooking storage for your items.  Large envelopes you get in the mail can keep sheets of stickers.  You may find that you have lots of things you can use to store your scrapbooking supplies once you start looking!

You can too purchase all sorts of items for scrapbooking storage but you might want to shop in office supply stores and container stores, and get away from those that are specifically labeled for scrapbooking in order to save yourself some money.  You might find a handy tote with compartments for small embellishments in the hardware section as small items like nuts and bolts need to be organized.  Or you may find something that is designed for cosmetics that also works for scrapbooking storage.  Your local dollar store may even have different items you can use and that would work quite well.  The key is to keep your eyes open and to be creative as you look around.  If you do, you might find that you have many options when it comes to scrapbooking storage already in your own home!
